[AlaskaRC] SOS

Ed,

I’d love to build a Frank Zaic Thermic 50X or Thermic 72, but gear would ruin the lines! And they appear to date from 1945. Lots of nice designs to choose from, regardless.

Doug,

I believe the Hand Launch and towline gliders still have to be from designs of the period, and according to the SOS rules, you must add landing gear.

This is what I see for models:

3E. Spirit of SAM (Electric Powered - Rubber Model Designs):-

A. Model Requirements:-

1. Any electric powered replica of a pre-1943 rubber model as recognized in the 'SAM Approved Designs List ~ Rubber Models, HL Glider and Towline Glider' may be flown in this event.
2. Unless stated otherwise, the model shall conform to current SAM R/C Old Timer Rules.
3. Scaling is permitted. There are no wing loading or weight requirements.
4. All models shall have landing gear. Landing gear shall be added to models designed without landing gear. A two-wheel gear may replace a one-wheel gear. Dropping gear is not permitted.

Towline glider? Scaling is permitted? Hmm.

On another note, you pretty much have to go straight to the site at http://www.antiquemodeler.org/ and navigate from there A crusty old site for a crusty old sport ;)

Very good email Doc. I suggest we finalize the rules for 2014 at the competition meeting. Since we are the Alaska chapter of SAM we could do lipos as and hand launching as you suggest. Now I have to build some SAM planes! Whoo-hoo!

>Mr. Ed.,
I am sorry that I gave the wrong info on the props. for SOS. The props can fold
according to your info. The flight pack is Ni-Cad with the weight limit. The
350 ma cell has been generally accepted. I personally prefer Lipos, but the
rules at presently set. We can use any battery that we want in our contests. We
can also hand launch our models.
I hope to have mine flown and trimmed out so it can be flown as a demonstration
at our contest. Competition will be welcome I am trying to build another one
before the contests.
